Funkle Ester is a funk/dicso band that was originally a break-away
band from Gammaman - two out of three of the members of the now
defunct Gammaman are in Funkle Ester. I think it's safe to say that
the sounds are polar opposites. It all started when Bryan McLucas
(the bass player) and myself were playing a show as Gammaman at
the lovely (dive) Engine Room and Bobby (the lead singer) had to
jump off stage to get some water. Bryan started to play a funk riff
from the Stones' "Miss You" and of course I joined in.
We grooved right along, having a good time (as good as it can get
in the Engine Room). This sparked a little idea in Bryan's head
that maybe a funk/disco band would be a cool idea. I said "let's
do it" and the plan was in motion.
Of course I cannot go without mentioning the rest of Funkle Ester,
all very accomplished musicians, and all provide a synergy that
makes this band The Absolute Best 8-member afro-wearing Band in
Athens. In alphabetical order:
