I've been playing drums for almost as long as I can remember. Growing
up, I literally etched the grooves that are still standing in my
parent's Gene Krupa records. I used to watch old clips of Buddy
Rich and I always wondered what it would be like to be up on stage
playing for an audience. Now I am lucky enough to know. To know
the practice, dedication, patience, anticipation, nervousness, relief,
and satisfaction of the whole process. It's all about the journey
- there is no means to an end.
Other than Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich, I grew up listening to, and
being influenced by all kinds of music - from Elvis to the Beatles,
to Led Zeppelin and The Who, Pat Metheney, Rush, and The Police.
I was also heavily influenced by most genres such as Classical,
Motown, Disco, Punk, and the ever-present pop. My listening has
evolved into acid jazz, trip hop, and various electronica such
as trance, house, big beat, ambient, ambient lounge, tripped-out
dub, nujazz, drum 'n bossa, downtempo, etc.
My main drumming influences were some of the Kings of the throne
during their heyday. Names like Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Mitch
Mitchell, Colin Bailey, John Bonham, Alan White, Neil Peart, Stewart
Copeland, and Jon Farris. My favorite drumming influence today
happens to be Jimmy Chamberlain of the now defunct Smashing Pumpkins.
His style captures most of what I like about drumming, pulling
from his early jazz roots to play non-traditional rock grooves
and fills, while being one of the fastest and most versatile
drummers of the modern rock scene.
